Does laser hair removal work on blonde, gray or red hair?

Laser hair removal works poorly on blonde, white, gray and true red hair because the laser targets melanin, and those hairs contain little or none. Dark blonde and light brown hair often respond, especially with the Alexandrite laser. For hair with no pigment, electrolysis is the effective permanent option, and we can advise you honestly at a consultation.

This is one of the few hard limits of the technology. The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft and carried down to the follicle. No pigment, no absorption, no result.

What responds

  • Black and dark brown hair: excellent
  • Medium and light brown: good, may take extra sessions
  • Dark blonde and auburn: often responds with the Alexandrite laser; a test patch tells us
  • Light blonde, gray, white, true red: not effective with laser

We would rather tell you this at a free consultation than sell you a package that will not work. A test patch takes two minutes and settles the question.

How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?

Most people need six to eight laser hair removal sessions spaced four to eight weeks apart for 80 to 90 percent permanent reduction, followed by an occasional maintenance session. Hair grows in cycles and the laser only destroys follicles in the active growth phase, so a series is required to catch every follicle. Face and hormonal areas often need a few more sessions. Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal produces permanent hair reduction, not guaranteed permanent removal of every hair. After a full series most patients have 80 to 90 percent less hair in the treated area for good; what remains is finer and lighter. Hormonal changes, pregnancy and certain medications can wake dormant follicles, so a maintenance session every year or two keeps the area clear. Read more

Does laser hair removal work on dark skin?

Yes, when the right laser is used. The Nd:YAG 1064nm laser bypasses the pigment in the skin and targets the hair follicle deeper down, making it safe and effective for brown and Black skin, including tanned skin. The Alexandrite 755nm laser, best for lighter skin, can burn darker skin. Skinpeccable has both lasers and chooses the right one at every visit. Read more

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Laser hair removal feels like a quick snap of a rubber band with each pulse, with warmth afterward. Modern lasers have built-in skin cooling that makes it very tolerable, and most patients find it less painful than waxing. Sensitive areas like the bikini line and upper lip sting more; numbing cream is available. Discomfort decreases with each session as hair thins. Read more

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before your session, avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for two weeks beforehand, and do not wax, pluck or thread for four to six weeks before, since the laser needs the hair root in place. Skip retinoids and exfoliating acids on the area for a few days, arrive with clean skin and no lotion, and tell us about any new medications. Read more

Can you get laser hair removal on your face?

Yes. The upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns, cheeks and neck are among the most common laser hair removal areas. Facial hair is often hormonally driven, so the face typically needs eight to twelve sessions and periodic maintenance rather than the six to eight sessions typical of the body. Sessions take only a few minutes and there is no downtime. Read more

What is the difference between Alexandrite and Nd:YAG laser hair removal?

The Alexandrite laser (755nm) is strongly absorbed by melanin, making it the fastest, most effective laser for light to olive skin with dark hair. The Nd:YAG (1064nm) penetrates deeper and is absorbed less by surface pigment, making it the safe choice for darker and tanned skin. The best practices have both and choose per patient. Skinpeccable uses both at every visit. Read more

Is laser hair removal safe and what are the side effects?

Laser hair removal is very safe when performed by trained medical staff with the right laser for your skin. Normal side effects are redness and slight swelling around the follicles for a few hours. Rare complications, including burns, blisters and pigment changes, are almost always the result of the wrong settings, a recent tan, or an inappropriate laser for darker skin. Read more
